Our elk hunts take place in unit 17 of West Central New Mexico. Unit 17 is a great unit for elk hunting because it has never been open to rifle hunting. The only way to hunt elk in this unit is with a bow or muzzleloader. This gives the bulls a really good chance to live longer and grow larger than in the units that are hunted with a rifle. It is not unusual to see 350+ class bulls on this hunt.

New Mexico elk hunters enjoy some great hunting every year. Big bulls can be found in most areas of the state with the majority of the big ones being found in Southwestern New Mexico around the Gila National Forest. The state is on a draw system and hunters must apply for and draw a tag to hunt elk. Tags aren't nearly as tough to draw as some of the other Western states, and the hunting can be pretty good in the right areas. Landowner permits are also available in New Mexico for those who still want to hunt if they aren't drawn. If you are looking for a great elk hunt with a good chance of killing a great bull, New Mexico just might be the right place to start looking.
